Last week, Alonso said he hopes that Hamilton wins the Championship if he doesn't manage to win. This coming from a reigning world champion who's in Mclaren alongside a rookie and has one of the fastest cars on the track?
McLaren signed up with Alonso after his first championship in 2005. He would go on to win another title with Renault before joining Mclaren. So a double champion racing alongside a rookie did give a obvious feeling that Alonso would be the No.1 driver by miles and the team would push everything to win Alonso another title. But Hamilton has taken the season with such a storm or should we say his placid, error-free driving.
With 4 races down and Hamilton leading the table, Alonso now knows he can't expect any favors as a No.1 driver and he has a man to beat in Hamilton. And Mclaren would be sensible enough to let them both compete for the title. Whatever the contract terms with Alonso are. Hamilton has won over everyone in F1. Any stunt like in the 2002 Austrian grand prix (also see this) will surely leave all in bitter taste and no respect for F1.
